Engineering College Rankings - Outlook vs India Today

So its finally out.
Last time it was India Today and now its Outlook.
Im talking about the Great Coveted survey and rankings of Engineering, Medical and other colleges/universities in India. The June edition of Outlook features a grand cover story over this.

Among the top 50 Private Institutes/colleges, BITS Pilani (www.bits-pilani.ac.in) topped the list while BIT Mesra was second closely followed by other colleges including Vellore Inst of Technology (VIT), DCE, NSIT, Thapar etc etc.

A Point to note is that BITS Pilani opted out of India Today's survey because of a pending court case between them (India Today had cited wrong facts about the collg in the 2005 survey, as claimed by the university). However there are no qualms against Outlook as far as I know.

A lot of people rely on these rankings to decide their "destiny" during Engg entrance exams and counselling. A lot of other people have rubbished these surveys as mere rubbish and some even say that they are bogus and biased. There was a great furore over India Today's Survey and you will find various blogs and posts that convey a general sentiment among the public that the rankings were more or less "cooked up".

Well, In my opinion, It does not matter what the rank of your instt is, what matters is who you are. period. A guy who time-passes for his 4 years even at an IIT is no better than someone who makes productive use of his/her graduation time at any college.

The "final verdict" is to be decided by the populace alone...lets see whether this turns out to be "yet another survey" and finds the wrath of the people; or whether this turns out to be a more acceptable one!

UPDATE: A follow up of this article is here: [http://xploretech.blogspot.com/2008/10/engineering-craze-in-india-and-college.html].
About: This is about the engineering college rankings (or the so called perception among people, of ranking). In my opinion, all the fuss is about confusion and misinformation. Half the students who get into engineering dont know what it is about, or what they want to do in life. What are the possible solutions? and why all this craze about engineering in India?

How come VIT was given such a high rating?

Abhishek Kumar said...

Whatever it is.... I dont think we should consider these ratings as any sort of benchmark to judge anything. As I had previously mentioned, A good engg will do good anywhere. Thats what I think. The only difference that arises is in the case of facilities provided by different institutes...that is one thing that could be compared holistically.

If you want to know the mystery behind VIT ranking please check the full page colour ads the concerned ragazines carried in the year.

Same story with AMITY... definitely not even in the top 10 best private institutes still they are advertising like mad that they are number one..

there should be government ruling against incorrect advertising. govt based ranking should be done based on open factors like student rank, student priority, facilities, avg salary, faculty etc etc...

Otherwise these stupid colleges are just playing with the lives of students for their own profit

i also want to point that how india today has missed the name of ismu dhanbad .it was at 9th rank in outlook's last year survey

neither india today nor outlook hav shown a precise result. and because of this many students r getting diverted. well india today seems to hav no idea about engg colleges.as they hav put up VIT in top 10 with ruling out institutions like ISM dhanbad and IIT hyd and NIT tirchy suratkal out of top 10.govt, shud notice this act and prohibit these magzines to spread rumour.

Prashant, its not "My ranking" that I wrote about. I simply quoted Outlook magazine's rankings and then criticized the system of ranking used by magazines which are not dependable at all.
Here's a follow up post on that: http://xploretech.blogspot.com/2008/10/engineering-craze-in-india-and-college.html

Hey how come IIITM gwalior does not figure in these lists.......
Its the first IIIT to be established and has been performing superbly in terms of placement as well....and of course it has superb infra and good reputed faculty.....still then why this isolation??? will somebody ask these guys(and if u don't believe then see the opening and closing rank of this institute in AIEEE counselling over the years)...
